Make Your Own Cake Stand!

March 27, 2007

So, I’ve been wanting a cake stand for a while now, but I didn’t feel like spending at least $30 or more. I saw this simple way to make your own on a blog somewhere.. I can’t remember. I thought I’d try it out. Let me know if you try it and how it worked for you!

I went to the local thrift store and bought some sundae cups and glass plates.. less than $1 each.I used clear caulk (it looks like a white paste then dries clear) I used way too much here… about half this amount is good and not too thick.Wipe any excess caulk off with a wet q-tip.
Then let it dry for a few days (It took mine a good 2 days to dry)
Then once it dries.. you’re all done!!
Then… I was at the dollar store last night and saw these… you can really make a cake stand with anything!

I’m am getting married next month and was going to plunk down over 100 dollars for the cake stands. These are much cuter and will save me serious $$$. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

This is a great tip, and I love the how-to shots.

One thing to remember, when picking your material, is to measure the FLAT CENTER of your plate.

You need a FLAT surface big enough for your cake to sit flat (so it doesn't crack, or so it doesn't slide around, or so it doesn't look crowded & funny).

The bottom ideas are great looking, but the rim of the plate is VERY wide–OK for eating dinner, of course, since the roast beef can slide partway up just fine. And OK for a pile of candy or something. But you can't fit an 8" layer cake on there, and you won't be able to fit that many cupcakes w/o having them tilt.

The plates you used in your first 3 examples have a very large flat area.

Another great way to do this is to use vintage plates and old mis-matched tea cups. Makes a nice vintage appearance. That’s what we’re doing for our wedding 🙂

This is a great tip! I’m helping a bride and we need 10 stands to make favor towers as centerpieces. Due to budget issues, renting and buying is just not affordable. Thanks to your craftiness, we’ve got the solution! yay!

you are uber genius! it's a great help for planning for my daughter's 1st birthday. I was planning to make tons of cupcakes but had no place to stack them on. buying an expensive cake stand (if I can find one) is irrational. so this is just perfect. thanks!
