book reviews ….

January 20, 2010

i always forget to share my current reads with you on this blog.
i thought i’d review a few books i’ve read recently in case you are in the market for some reading material.
the time traveler’s wife.
i really enjoyed this book. i wanted to read for a little while and finally got around to it after seeing the movie.
a great love story. a little much on the curse words, but still a good read!the book theif.
i have also been meaning to read this book for a while.
and, … i loved it!
it takes place in the time of nazi germany and it is the story of 9 year old girl narrated by death its self.
i loved the book because it taught me:
* that even in horrible circumstances people can still be good.
* words are indeed very powerful.

p.s. i’ve heard this [the book thief] is going to be made into a movie. is that true?and, the last book i read recently.
actually i started and finished it last night [it’s a pretty short book] is the boy in the striped pajamas.very good as well, and also takes place in nazi germany.
i thought that writing about the holocaust through the eyes of children was a very interesting perspective. so, there it is.my latest reads.do you have any book suggestions?

Oh gosh… I have WAY too many books that I love but I'll leave you with a couple.

Keturah & Lord Death- it's a Young Adult book but written beautifully. It's very much like a folk tale & has some beautiful allegories. It's a great little book.

The Poisonwood Bible- This book follows a family (the sisters are the narrators) who live in Africa with their father who is a preacher there. It goes a little long a the end but is hands down one of my favorite books.

Hunger Games- It's another YA book, but is a MAJOR cross over book. It's won all sorts of awards & really deserves it. It's written wonderfully. It has a violent premise but isn't gory.

I could probably go on forever, but I'll spare you. If you need any other ideas let me know, I'm a reading NUT!

I've yet to hear a bad thing about Book Thief. It's next on my list… hopefully I'll get to it tomorrow:) I jut finished The Hunger Games, and it's sequel Catching Fire and wish I could re-read them all over already. Don't get turned away by the gruesome sounding plot, it's one of the most entertaining books I've ever read. One of those books you never want to put down!

oh funny, i just read that someone else already recommended that to you- now you really should read it!

One of my favorite book series starts with "These is My Words", then "Sarah's Quilt", and finally "Star Garden." Beautifully written and makes one appreciate living in our modern times.

I didn't read Boy in the Striped Pajamas but I saw the movie and loved it.

i heard great things about boy in the striped pajamas as well, haven't read it yet though. i'm looking for great book recommendations too although I have a long list I have barely touched. one i recently read and liked was flowers for algernon. and cyrano de bergerac has always been a favorite.

I am so intrigued by how well liked The Time Travelers Wife is. I read the book awhile ago b/c it came highly recommended, yet the appeal was lost on me…What about it did you like? I thought the initial meeting of the two main characters was creepy, and after seeing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I thought that the concept of the movie was similar to that of The Time Travelers Wife but much more brilliantly executed.

I loved The Time Traveler's Wife and The Book Thief as well. Also loved A Thousand Splended Suns. I just finished Wally Lamb's latest – The Hour I First Believed – and enjoyed it. Getting started on "The Help" now.

I also just read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie book, and enjoyed it very much indeed.

A book set in India: A Fine Balance. Oh my, that story is amazing.

The Senator's Wife by Sue Miller. Just finished that yesterday.
