where the wild things are party ...

first, i want to thank you all for your nice comments on the invitations, and party favors i posted.

the party went really well, and most importantly ezra and all his cousins had a blast!

this year, i served more simple food, and focused more on the games and entertainment, since ezra is starting to get to the age where fun is more important.

here are a few pictures from the party.

"welcome wild things"

crowns and wands for all the wild things

Photobucket

the wild guests {ezra + his cousins}

Photobucket

the food: green apples with caramel dip, green veggies with ranch dip, palm tree cupcakes, chips and dips, and "wild thing" water

the "max" cake

Photobucket

games: pin the wolf tail on max

Photobucket

crown walk : we put the gold crown numbers in a circle, when the music stopped we would call out a number, and the person on the number won a prize!

we also had a reading of the book at the beginning of the party. and, the small guests helped act out the book.

Photobucket

"thank you" mints for the older guests that said, "thanks for coming to the party ... wild thing." and, of course the party favor boxes for the kids

Photobucket

the birthday boy

of course, i can't believe this little guy is three?!

he absolutely loved the party, which made all the hard work worth it. it was a lot of fun to see him so excited for his birthday this year!

until next year...

oh, and before i forget.

storing food ...

with getting my basement done, came my own food storage room!

i've been working really hard to build up a little supply of food. it is nice to have items on hand that we eat a lot, and it makes me feel better that if some kind of crisis were to come, we have food on hand to last a little while. i've loved just running down stairs for a can of tomato sauce if my pantry is running low. i try to think of it as my little "grocery store."

i still have a long way to go, but i feel good about how far we've come! my next step is to start storing more long term food like wheat, beans, etc.

to learn more, check out my latest post over on the zupas blog on my tips on how to start storing food.

so, do you have a stockpile of food in case of a rainy day?

the party favors ...

Photobucket

wow!

i'm feeling good and on top of things for ezra's party this saturday.

we'll see if it all comes together on time.

i put together these party favor boxes for all of ezra's cousins for the where the wild things are party.

i basically went out and bought as many green packaged items as i could find.

Photobucket

Photobucket

my friend caitlin let me use the labels she made for her sons party last year. i tweeked them a bit and used them to label the bubbles and party poppers with, "a magic trick to tame the wild things."

i also made labels to attach to some glassine bags with candy in colors to match the theme. the label says, "wild treats to gnash your terrible teeth on."

Photobucket

Photobucket

i finished off the boxes with some green and white bakers twine, stickers with their names on it, and some darling where the wild things are pins i found on etsy, from the shop, pin back attack.

Photobucket

hopefully the kids will like it!

potato + leek gratin ...

Photobucket

i love, love, love leeks!

so, it's no surprise that i would love them in my potatoes too!

i made some cute individual potato gratins in small ramekins this week.
why? well, no special reason other than that small little servings are just too cute, right?

check out my recipe for potato and leek gratin on my post this week over on the zupas blog.

and, it's also asparagus season! yay!

the invitations ...

Photobucket

i finally got all of the invitations done for the big where the wild things are party.

i ended up printing them on textured cardstock, and i was happy with how they turned out!

i decided to tie the brown kraft envelopes with garden twine, i thought it would be a perfect "wild things" touch!

i hand addressed them in a wild font, and got them all delivered!

i think i may have gotten carpel tunnel, but it was worth it all in the end.

i'll post more party details as i finish them up!

globes, a shelf, and a rocking chair ...

Photobucket

as i said before, we just finished our basement.

i'm still organizing and trying to get everything in its place.

over the weekend we finally were able to get to ikea to pick up an expedit shelf to organize all of our toys. it was fun for me to finally put up all my globes i've been collecting over the past three years. i also was able to pick up a modern rocker that i've been wanting forever. [thanks caitlin!]

i quickly threw all the toys up on the shelf. so, i'm sure it will change a bit, but it's really nice to have it all in one area. now, if it would only stay organized. but, with these two kids... that's just not going to happen.

Photobucket

oh well, can't have it all right?

as far as other things going on, i'm in deep party planning mode for ezra's party this weekend.

i've been re-labeling just about everything.

Photobucket

caitlin sent me over a label from her son's party last year that i tweeked a bit to match ezra's party, so that really helped speed up the process!

i'll share more pics of the planning tomorrow!

re-post: easter toolbox ...

i thought i'd do a little re-post on the easter toolbox i put together for ezra last year in case anyone was in need of a last minute easter idea.

it was a lot of fun filling it up with goodies.

this year, i [um, i mean, the easter bunny] fully intends to stock up the same toolbox with all sorts of new toys and goodies. [i bought a ton of annie's bunnies, the crackers and the fruit snacks.. loved they they are all natural, and are already in the shape of bunnies! because, really this kid does not need any more candy...]

can't wait to see his face when he see's the easter bunny made a visit to our house!

book review: catching fire ...

i was finally able to get a hold of a copy of the sequel to the hunger games, catching fire.

it didn't disappoint. it pretty much continues where things left off in the last book. although i couldn't help but feel like this book was rushed to get to the next book that comes out in august... but, still i couldn't put it down wanting to know what happens next.

now, i have to wait 'til august to see...

if you haven't started reading this series. i'd recommend it. they are intriguing fast reads.

shop update ...

i just listed two new earrings in the shop.

these are some of my favorites i've made in a while.

perfect for spring! and, very high quality made with semi-precious stones and all 14kt gold filled metal. they are small and sweet, hang a little less than one inch from the ear.

lucy earrings, $26
chloe earrings, $26

galettes bretonne ...

growing up, buckwheat galettes were a common dish in my household.

my father grew up in the brittany region of france, where galettes where born.
i remember sitting around the table with my cousins in france watching my uncle prepare galettes and crêpes on a large crêpe maker. we'd each wait our turn for a yummy galette with ham, cheese, and a fried egg on top. it would be served with a nice fresh salad with vinaigrette, and the sooner the yolk dripped all over everything, the better!

you can check out my latest post over on the zupas blog for the recipe for buckwheat galettes.
