Now who doesn’t love to celebrate love of all kinds!  I once read that love is making space in your life for someone else.  As I have gotten older, I have found that the definition of love has changed for me a lot over the years as I have continued on my journey.  Love for me as a mother, and wife and women in my community with friendships is much different than what I used to see it as in the past.  A huge part of love and a great way to show love is to offer service.  For me this is one of the truest forms of love, and something that I have been making a conscience effort to make a priority in my life.  I wanted to share a few ideas and ways to serve and show love that I have enjoyed doing over the years.

4 Ways to Offer Service and Spread Love:

1.  Drop by a Basket of Love:  Putting together a special basket with someone in mind is a great way to show love to someone.  Who doesn’t enjoy feeling that love, and knowing that someone was thinking of them?  Baskets of love are something I enjoy putting together for someone who needs an extra drop of sunshine in their day.  And, it is so simple to put something together to drop by to a friend or loved one.  I loved putting together a basket with a bunch of my favorite goodies, including the new Everything Grows with Love book.  It is the perfect addition to a care basket, and the recipient can refer to it’s inspirational quotes and thoughts for many days to come! I know this will brighten someones day!

2. Find ways to Serve in your Community:  Being involved in your community and showing you care is the perfect way to show love!  There are so many needs to be filled, and lending a helping hand can really make all the difference in the lives of people near or far.  So often we want to show others that love and concern, but we aren’t sure how or what we can do.  I recently have been enjoying finding opportunities to serve using the JustServe.Org website or app.  I was blown away with how many opportunities there are to help and serve right in my own community when I typed in my zip code!  There are so many opportunities to chat with the elderly on the phone, help deliver meals, teach children how to read, coach a team, be a girl scout leader, help educate new parents with newborns, serve nutritious meals to those in need, put together hygiene kits, play piano at a nursing home, clean local trails, offer education on website design, volunteer as a local museum tour guide.  There are so many service opportunities and these were just a few examples of help that is needed within 5 miles of my own community!  And, with the push of a button I could be a volunteer or offer service in the matter of minutes. The best part is that so many of them can be done as a family involving your children!  My own little family recently volunteered to help make pantry packs at a local food pantry.  My kids loved the process and were able to learn that several children even their own age at their own school are in need of food and are hungry on the weekends when they don’t have school lunch to feed them.  They were surprised to find out that in our area there were children being given these pantry packs of food.  My kids loved being able to pack some food items for them, and write and draw pictures to tuck in a special note to the recipient.  I loved being able to have that experience with my family, and let them know of the importance of showing love through service to others, even people we don’t even know.

3. Let someone know you are thinking of them:  It always feels good to know that someone is thinking of you.  This can be a super simple gesture such as sending a text, dropping by to say “hi”, making a phone call, giving a sincere compliment, expressing gratitude and thanks, opening a door for someone, making eye contact with a stranger and offering a smile, dropping by some flowers just because, the list can go on and on! Often times we think we have to make it a huge act, but sometimes the most simplest deed that can make the biggest difference!

4. Cultivate an In-Person Relationship:  With so many ways of communicating these days without even having to see a person face to face, it can make it easy to forget to cultivate a relationship with others in person.  As amazing as technology is, there really isn’t a comparison to speaking to someone face to face. Asking a friend to lunch, really listening during a conversation, sincerely wanting to get to know someone can bring about a much more fulfilled relationship, and closeness.  I have found the more I cultivate relationships in person, the more there is a safe place to converse openly about the real things in life that matter, the highlights, and even the struggles or hard times.  This can help us feel seen and less alone, feeding a and growing a relationship that can really be a benefit in both good times and bad.  And, don’t we all need a person in both of those times?!

I sincerely hope this will help with some ideas if you have been wanting to find ways to serve others and spread the love.  I know that even the tiniest ripple with go further than we ever will know if we take the time to offer service to someone else along the way.
